We're putting together a community effort to reopen the Faith Dairy. Please pass the word and have anyone who is interested in supporting the effort in any way (signing petitions, demonstrations, letter writing, financial support, etc.) visit our website at http://www.savefaithdairy.org and endorse the letter from the Summit-Waller Community Association.

Faith Dairy

Our current plan is to gather a consortium of conservation groups and private equity to invest in re-opening the dairy, preserving the land permanently, and putting together a non-profit to manage other activities on the land, such as educational opportunities, cultural activities, etc.  The possibilities are endless, but first, we need community support!

We're collecting individual signatures and pledges from businesses which sell dairy products to support the idea that it is desired by the community as a whole and that the idea is an economically viable business.  Please distribute this alert to anyone you feel might be interested in supporting our effort either as an individual or as a business

About Faith Dairy

The Faith Dairy served the community of Summit Waller in unincorporated Pierce County from the end of World War II in 1945 through 2007.  It may be the last remaining drive-thru dairy in the State of Washington.  When the dairy ceased operations, the community was heartbroken at the loss of a community institution, an iconic image and reminder of a simpler time, and an important and historic part of the farm culture that has defined rural Pierce County for decades.

The Threat of Suburban Sprawl

The Faith Dairy owns 100 acres of land in Summit Waller, and 300 acres in Roy.  All of this land is in imminent danger of being sold off in pieces and converted into suburban sprawl - single family homes and strip malls.

The possibilities for an enriching use for the Faith Dairy land are truly endless, and more sprawling housing developments and strip malls are not what we want.  We need your help and support in order to make it clear to the current owners of Faith Dairy, our potential investors and to our elected leaders how important local food production institutions are to our community.

Signs of Hope

Residents of Pierce County, in cooperation with a growing number of business, civic, agriculture, conservation and preservation groups are launching an effort to support and re-open Faith Dairy as a certified organic dairy. This will preserve hundreds of acres of valuable working farmland for Pierce County in perpetuity, create jobs and develop our local economy, and enhance sustainable, local food production.

We need your voice!

We need to demonstrate to the Faith Dairy family, potential investors, and our elected leaders how important Faith Dairy and local food production to the community, and that broad public support exists for the re-opening and expansion of Faith Dairy and local food production in Pierce County.

Lets save this property from further sprawl.

Lets have a plan to convert old run down Pierce County neighborhoods that are already high density into new housing. The county could give tax incentives to developers willing to convert these old areas into something new and affordable.

The Pierce County Planning Commision has to get creative to solve these problems.

stay out of other people's business

stay out of other people businesses and lives, if faith dairy, grand as it was wants to close, let them. this is america, land of freedom, do you pay the property taxes, do you have to abide by all the state and federal regulations? let people be free to do what they want with their land. hell, i hope they build a wal-mart.

Really? A Wal-Mart?

No one in the Save Faith Dairy effort wants to rip off the landowners or take away their right to do with the land what they choose - we're mobilizing to make a fair offer on the land so that the landowner can make the return they want without having to resort to development and a lowering of the quality of life in Summit Waller! There's enough Wal-Marts anyway, and farm land is important! The way the economy is going, only the regions of the country which can produce their own food will be secure!

If the Faith Dairy land is purchased by the county and conservation groups, they will be paying the property taxes, yes! And state and federal regulations apply to everyone! No one is talking about taking away anyone's rights, but there isn't any good reason to ruin the countryside with sprawl when it isn't necessary to get the landowner a fair return on their investment.

We need to work together to solve these problems - the quality of the environment affects everyone.
