The Tahoma Organizer supports the following groups, which are working to improve our communities on behalf of the citizens who live here. We encourage you to visit their websites and support these groups in any way you can, by donating time or money, or by telling others about what they're doing.

The Conversation

The Conversation is a group of Tacoma and South Sound residents committed to the building of a diverse, critically engaged, social justice community for the task of procuring for ourselves and our communities a better life. With "Justice for All" as its foundational principle, the group has two primary foci; providing encouragement and support for social justice activists and promoting justice in such areas as legal system, wages, housing, healthcare, and education.

Friends of Surprise Lake Creek

We work on the Surprise Lake Creek Natural Area which was an old farmstead.  Purchased in 2003 by the City of Edgewood, the Surprise Lake Creek Natural Area is maintained by the City of Edgewood and the volunteer efforts of many individuals and organizations.

The long term goals of Friends of Surprise Lake Creek are:

·   restore natural riparian vegetation to the site

·   provide environmental education to the community

·   restore creek functions to Surprise Lake Creek

·   improve the seasonal hydrological pattern of the creek

·   provide the community with a quiet retreat

·   enhance the health of the Hylebos Creek watershed by improving water quality and managing storm water.

Guadalupe Land Trust

Preserving Green Space in the Heart of Tacoma.  The Guadalupe Land Trust acquires and preserves green space in the Hilltop community of Tacoma.  The intention is to help connect neighbors to one another, nourish and sustain the neighborhood's ethnic diversity, and serve as an aducational opportunity for community members while providing space in which to grow nutritious foods.

People for Peace, Justice and Healing

People for Peace, Justice, and Healing meets every Saturday morning (except Dec. 25) from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Associated Ministries, 1224 South "I" Street, Tacoma, WA 98405 to share concerns and plan activities. We are involved in educational events, lectures, study groups, workshops, and calls for community action. Please consider joining us. All people of good will are welcome!

RESULTS Tacoma

RESULTS Tacoma is one of the 100 RESULTS non-profit volunteer lobbying groups around the U.S. committed to using our personal and political power lobbying elected officials for effective solutions and key policies that affect hunger and poverty.  We are committed to creating the political will to end hunger and the worst aspects of poverty in the U.S. and the world.  We are a global group lobbying for global health, microfinance and education for all.  Domestic groups  lobby concerning health care for all, early childhood development and tax policies and the wealth gap (in the U.S.).

Summit-Waller Community Association

The Summit-Waller Community Association (SWCA) is a voluntary, non-profit group made up of citizens residing in this unique community.  The SWCA holds annual public meetings to elect the governing Board, which takes an active role in maintaining the rural nature of the area.  Other Board activities include:

·   Working with neighboring community associations

·   Working with the Summit-Waller Citizen's Advisory Commission

·   Sponsoring regular roadside cleanups

·   Addressing community safety issues

·   Generating general interest in the unique qualities of the community

·   Promote quality of life and neighborhoods and enjoyment of property for individuals in the Summit-Waller Community.

Sustainable Tacoma-Pierce

Sustainable Tacoma-Pierce concentrates on helping to empower local citizens to make their own lives environmentally sustainable.

Tacoma Avenue Coalition

The Tacoma Avenue Coalition is a coalition of residents and people from the businesses, social services, churches, government agencies, and other organizations along the Tacoma Avenue Corridor. There are no requirements of membership, merely a desire to encourage the continuing improvements occurring in this diverse part of the city.  Currently, the Tacoma Avenue Coalition serves the corridor as defined by the city's Community Based Services program. It is a 40 block area running south from 6th Avenue to South 25th Street, and west from Fawcett to G Street.  We advocate as a coalition for safety and sustainable development that values the diverse character of the Tacoma Avenue neighborhood through:

·   Providing networking and communication regarding common issues in the area

·   Serving as an advocate for the area

·   Monitoring crime and safety

·   Encouraging economic development and increased housing options

·   Assisting people who struggle on the margins

Tacoma-Pierce Progressive Roundtable

The Tacoma Progressive Roundtable is a relationship building forum for activists in democratic social movements.  We meet monthly, fourth Fridays, at Commencement Bay Coffee Company to share information, news and know-how and lend strength to each others' efforts.

Tahoma Audubon Society

The Tahoma Audubon Society’s mission is to conserve and restore ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and earth’s biological diversity.

We strive to involve youth, families, and seniors in the discovery and protection of native habitat throughout Pierce County. We develop and offer year-round, family-based, nature education programming at the Tacoma Nature Center (Tacoma, WA), the Adriana Hess Audubon Center (University Place, WA), and at the Morse Wildlife Preserve (Graham, WA). 

We organize and lead field trips throughout Puget Sound and the State.  We also work to affect public policy at the city, county and state level to achieve our conservation goals.

Washington State Jobs with Justice is a 14 year old coalition of over 150 member organizations and 4,800 "I'll Be There" individual pledgers fighting together for workers' rights and economic & social justice. Whether through creative, direct action on the streets or our Workers' Rights Board in CEO board rooms, we are committed to supporting working people and their families.
